ENGAGEMENT

Engagement Objectives

The planning and conceptual design of the Atlanta RiverLands and the Chattahoochee Brick Company Memorial, Greenspace, and Park represent an unprecedented opportunity for community connection, restoration, and shared visioning.

Together, these efforts will shape a more accessible, inclusive, and meaningful Chattahoochee River waterfront that reflects the priorities, histories, and aspirations of the communities that live along it. The success of this combined project depends on the participation of a broad and diverse coalition of community members and stakeholder groups. These include descendants of those forced to labor at the brick company, local residents, Indigenous peoples, historians, educators, environmental justice leaders, recreational users, trail advocates, mobility experts, and civic agencies.

The work will result in a clear set of deliverables organized around the physical space. The social richness and complexity of this project suggest that the most significant design challenge is to create a welcoming, transparent, and equitable process that brings diverse voices together toward a shared vision over the next 16 months.

Trust

Trust is the foundation of this planning and design effort, shaping every phase of the Atlanta RiverLands and Chattahoochee Brick Company Site projects. We will build trust through clear communication, shared timelines and budgets, and consistent follow-through. We recognize that many communities have experienced broken promises in past projects, which has led to justified skepticism. We will earn trust through respect, care, and tangible outcomes. The Design Team will center the voices of the many communities connected to these sites—descendants, residents, historians, environmental advocates, and the national community impacted by convict leasing—while fostering long-term relationships between them and the City of Atlanta and Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC).

Transparency

Transparency is essential for building understanding, trust, and consensus. Both the Atlanta RiverLands and the Chattahoochee Brick Company Site projects involve significant unknowns—from brownfield remediation and archaeological investigations to trail alignment decisions and environmental constraints. The Design Team will follow a research-driven process that incorporates subject-matter experts and leverages community knowledg

Accessibility

Accessibility is both a commitment and a practice in this project. It is essential to honor the cultural sensitivity of the Chattahoochee Brick Company Site and the many communities connected to the Atlanta RiverLands. The engagement approach will ensure that all community members—especially those who have been historically excluded from decision-making—have meaningful opportunities to shape the project’s priorities, design, and implementation. We will employ strategies that engage a diverse range of stakeholders, from in-depth thematic discussions to broader forums that bring together different voices. By tailoring our process to reflect the lived experiences and priorities of those most connected to these sites, we will strive for an inclusive and lasting outcome.
